Srinagar, Feb 2: Family members including children of a woman whose husband died of cancer today protested here in the Press Enclave, alleging that her in-laws are constantly harassing and abusing her including kids.
The family hailing from Munawarabad Srinagar said that the husband of their daughter, Irfan Ahmad Shad, 40, died of cancer while he was living separately at his Lal Bazar residence.
Soon after the death of her husband, the family said, her in-laws including sister-in-laws started harassing and beating their daughter named Gulshan, 37.
Gulshan’s son was also accompanying his relatives told the reporters here that unknown men including one who he named as Umar came a few days ago and beat his mother up and also snatched her mobile phone.
“They came and beat us up; they took our phones and we were thrown out of the house; then someone called up my maternal house and informed about the same, then they called the police who came to our help,” said Nauman Irfan, 10, Gulshan’s son.
As per the family, Irfan died in September last year due to cancer and since then, her in-laws have been harassing, abusing and even beating her daughter pulp for unknown reasons.
“They basically want to kick her out along with kids and are trying to snatch the rights of the kids; there are sisters of Irfan who are divorcees, they are trying to snatch it all and kick them out,” said Gulshan’s sister Sakeena.
She added: “When Irfan was struggling for his life, they were nowhere in sight; they did not even come to visit him while he was on his deathbed in SKIMS.”
After the incident, the mohalla committee which was already in the knowledge of the issue went to the house of Dr Akbar Shah who is the father in law of Gulshan and gave them a stern warning.
“After that, the family went and complained to police that the members of the mohalla committee harassed them which shocked everyone,” Sakeena said.
The family said that the issue is already in the court and the in-laws of Gulshan have already managed to get a restraining order which has been keeping Gulshan’s family away from her.
After the family held a protest here, the accused family also reached here and tried to put their version in front of the media men.
Sister in law of Gulshan who appeared here clearly said that they want Gulshan out of their home and that they are ready to take care of the kids.
“They are alleging that Gulshan was beaten, if it is proven that Umar—who is being accused of beating her—did that, I will hand him over to police. Rather, people from Mohalla came and harassed us; we have lawfully taken it to the court and we are dealing with it; their allegations are baseless,” said Tehmeena daughter of Dr Akbar Shah, a resident of Salfia Masjid Lal Bazar Srinagar.
