Charar-e-Sharief Masjid not unsafe: JKPCC

SRINAGAR, Aug 7: After the reports of Grand Masjid at Charar-e-Sharief in Budgam being ‘unsafe,’ the officials today stated that the management of the mosque was asked to only “avoid mass gatherings.”
The officials of the JKPCC said that there are no cracks in the structure and that the NIT Srinagar is doing the safety audit and will have to give the design for the retro-fitting.
“The structure needs a little rectification by way of retrofitting on which the NIT is working and it will be done soon; the experts will provide the design aimed at giving additional arch support to the structure and as of now, I am telling you that the structure is not unsafe,” General Manager, Kashmir, JKPCC Shaukat Ahmad told Excelsior.
He said that the NIT Srinagar is working on two probabilities which will be implemented as additional support and by Thursday that design will be submitted by them.
“By Thursday, they will provide us with the design and after that, the work will be tendered out and within 20 days the work will be done,” he said.
JKPCC was said that the slab was laid 12 years back and if there would have been any chances of the building being unsafe, the same would have been closed forthwith.
“We would have closed it way back if there were any possibilities of the building being unsafe; the routine prayers were going on there since then,” the officials said.
In this regard, the Corporation has even submitted a report to the Chief Secretary stating the matter and informing him about the audit proceedings and the measures being taken by the experts
The JKPCC reiterated that the building is safe and the letter that was written by the NIT was for precautionary measures and it was impressed that the mass gatherings are avoided.
Earlier, in a letter sent by the Deputy General Manager JKPCC, Budgam to the District Administration Budgam it was stated that the NIT is analysing the detailed design calculations to provide a remedy for safety audit while adding that the “caretaker of the said mosque may be directed to avoid mass gatherings.
