JAMMU, Oct 25: Ch Manmohan Singh, State President of AlJMS, along with Ch Yudhvir Singh, National General Secretary AIJMS, called on Defense Minister, Rajnath Singh in New Delhi and apprised him of the situation under which people of Jat biradari in J&K are living, more particularly the adverse affect of cross border disturbances on their families.
Ch Manmohan Singh informed the Defense Minister that due to border fencing and mining on the lands of the Jat community people, their agricultural land has become uncultivable. “At this stage, shifting of border fence is not possible, but those thousands of acres of land which supported households of hundreds of families, is if no use to the people now,” he explained and demanded that the affected people must be paid for their lands so that they can build another source of income for their families.
Ch Manmohan also informed Rajanth Singh that 90 percent of the border residents belong to Jat Biradari and these border families act as a part of the Army in manning the border and they should get equal status as those of Army casualties and martyrs. “During the cross border firing, their family members are injured severely or fatally. Many are left handicapped for life. At this time they are dependent on Govt for relief, but all they receive is Rs 2 lakh to next of kin of the dead person. This relief package must atleast be of Rs 10 lakh, along with the provision of treatment of these injured people in Army Hospitals, just as it is done for the injured Army men, or their compensation be as such, so they can get their treatment in private hospital. Our people have died because proper treatment was not available to them immediately,” he added. Moreover, he further demanded, these people should be compensated for losing their livestock, their only means of earning.
Rajnath Singh assured them that soon a system will be made effective in which people injured more than 50 percent will be treated in Army Hospitals and those unfortunate who lose their lives, their families will be compensated substantially. Also a certain relief package will be set for the loss of their livestock , accordingly.
Ch Manmohan Singh also demanded special recruitment drive for the border residents and reservation to Jats at par with other 11 States.
