JAMMU, Apr 8: The Central Government Pensioners’ Welfare Association (CGPWA), Jammu had a lively interactive session today with the officers and scientist of Department of Environment, Ecology and Remote Sensing at Raika Environment Park, opposite Mahamaya Temple.
Over 35 members of the Association participated in today’s Environment Awareness programme and evinced keen interest in the activities leading to climate change, its impact in different areas, rise in average temperature and its causes and impact in J&K. These issues were discussed holistically sharing concerns of the people and preventive actions of the Government, civil society and the State.
Sharing the alarming outcome of the research conducted on “Climate Change Vulnerability in Himalayan States”, Scientist Majid Farooq said that Kargil was found to be the most vulnerable area in the State to climate change followed by Leh and Bandipore.
“The possibilities of ecological disaster are more in these districts than others. J&K has recorded average increase of 1.4°C in last 30 years against global temperature rise of 0.7 degree C. It means that the precipitation i.e. rainfall/snowfall has decreased in J&K besides erratic climatic behavior,” he added.
The DFO Environment Kuldeep Kumar Sharma apprised the pensioners’ group that the department has been vigorously engaged in creating awareness among the school students, civil society groups and people at large about climate change, various environmental schemes and new technologies developed in India and abroad in this vital sector.
OP Sharma Vidyarthi, Director, Forest Research Centre and environmentalist who is well known in the country for his initiative “Tree Talk” also spoke on the occasion. He explained various Government efforts that are underway to promote forestry and ecology.
