JAMMU, Sept 23: The Co-ordination Committee of ruling coalition partners—National Conference and Congress (I) would hold another round of meeting shortly in Srinagar, the summer capital of the State to further discuss and finalise names for vacancies in the Public Service Commission (PSC) and Backward Classes Commission (BCC) besides taking up other issues.
The Co-ordination Committee had met last month in which it had discussed names for four vacancies in the PSC and six in the BCC.
The CC, which is headed by PCC (I) president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz, would also take up holding of Municipal and Block Development Council (BDC) elections, which have already been announced by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Omar had few days back directed Housing and Urban Development and Rural Development Departments to take requisite steps for holding Municipal and BDC elections by the end of December this year.
Prof Soz, who flew back to New Delhi after two days visit to Jammu during which he held discussions with party Ministers, legislators and leaders, would convene the Co-ordination Committee meeting in Srinagar shortly.
Out of five other members of the Committee, two were on foreign trips including Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather and Law and Parliamentary Affairs and Rural Development Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar.
The meeting would be convened on their return, sources said.
They added that in its last meeting the Coordination Committee had discussed four names for appointment as PSC members and six names for Backward Classes Commission. The vacancies in the PSC and the BCC haven’t been fulfilled for the past quite sometime now.
Three vacancies had arisen after the retirement of Dr HL Goswami, Roop Lal Bharti and MM Bhat while fourth vacancy was pending after the retirement of Dr Tara Singh.
The National Conference and Congress have decided to equally share the vacancies by proposing their candidates for the posts in the PSC and the BCC. After clearance by the Co-ordination Committee, the Government would nominate the members.
In addition to discussing names for the vacancies in the PSC and the BCC, the Co-ordination Committee was also expected to discuss the elections to Urban Local Bodies and Block Development Councils, which have been hanging fire for the past quite sometime.
The Chief Minister had already announced that elections to the ULBs and the BDCs would be held by the end of December this year.
The elections to the Municipalities were pending since March 2010 while this would be first ever election to the BDCs after Panchayats were constituted last year. The BDC elections would be second tier of the Panchayats.
The Co-ordination Committee members included Mr Rather, Mr Sagar and Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan, former Minister, all from National Conference, Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand and Mangat Ram Sharma, former Deputy Chief Minister, both from Congress. Prof Soz is chairman of the CC.
