RAJOURI, May 24: A day-long cardiac awareness-cum-health check-up camp was organized by Head, Department of Cardiology, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, Dr Sushil Sharma, in association with SVS Charitable Trust at SVS Degree College, Rajouri, where more than 1,000 people benefited from free medical consultations, diagnostic tests and medicines.
The camp was inaugurated by Shri Shri 1008 Swami Vishwatamanand Ji Maharaj along with Dr Sushil Sharma, Vibodh Gupta and Dr AS Bhatia (Principal, GMC Rajouri). ECGs, lipid profiles and blood tests were conducted on-site, while medicines were distributed free of cost as per medical advice.
Addressing the gathering, Swami Vishwatamanand Ji Maharaj stressed that true health lies in harmony of body, mind and soul. He said spiritual practices such as prayer, meditation and selfless service help reduce stress and promote inner peace, which is important for heart health. He also urged people to adopt a balanced lifestyle based on simplicity, compassion and discipline.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sushil Sharma highlighted the growing scientific evidence linking emotional and spiritual wellbeing with cardiovascular health. He said modern lifestyles marked by stress, anxiety and unhealthy habits are contributing significantly to heart diseases, hypertension and related disorders. Chronic stress, he explained, increases stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, leading to higher blood pressure, inflammation and damage to blood vessels.
Dr Sharma said spiritual wellbeing through meditation, mindfulness, gratitude and positive social connections helps improve emotional balance, lowers depression and strengthens coping abilities during illness and recovery. He emphasized that spiritual care complements scientific medicine by addressing emotional and psychological dimensions of health.
