JAMMU, Jan 12: While it may take about 10 days for the repair work of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway which caved in near Ramban two days ago, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) would launch a bailey bridge at the site to maintain supplies to Kashmir.
Project Director, National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), Ramban Sector, PK Phonsa said since it may take at least 10 days for raising concrete protection wall and filling the area at Kela Morh near Ramban where highway has been breached, the authorities have decided to launch a bailey bridge at the site for temporary restoration of the highway.
“The weather is very cold in the area. The cemented structure being raised near the bridge at the site is nearly 15-17 mt in height and nearly same length. It require some time to gain strength. Loaded heavy vehicles will pass over the new raised and filled area. We do not want to take risk. If it is not given some time to get strengthened, it may collapse,” the Project Direct maintained.
“We tied up with the BRO and they have assured us to raise bailey bridge at the site within 2-3 days. The work would be started at the site tomorrow. It is expected to get this temporary bridge in next two days. With this at least supplies to Kashmir valley will be maintained,” Phonsa added.
IG Traffic, J&K, T Namgyal said that he paid visit to the site and reviewed restoration work. He said he also spoke to the NHAI engineers at the site who told that a bailey bridge is being launched at the site because concrete protection wall being raised at the caved in road patch near Ramban, require some time for gaining strength. He added that at least one way traffic will be restored in next 2-3 days with the launch of this bailey bridge at the site besides ferrying essential supplies to Kashmir.
