SRINAGAR, Apr 11: The Border Roads Organization under the Project Beacon has cleared snow on all passes in Kupwara and Gurez ahead of the Parliamentary polls that were held today.
A BRO official said that generally passes are opened during mid April, but due to the Parliamentary elections men and machinery under Project Beacon were put into service for opening of the passes before polls days for smooth travel of polling staff.
The official said Project Beacon is entrusted with the responsibility of carrying out snow clearance and opening of all the strategic passes of Kupwara and Gurez including NC pass connecting the Tangdhar sub division, Pharkiyan Gali connecting Keran sector, Z Gali connecting the Machal sector in the Kupwara district and Razdaan pass connecting Gurez and Tulail valley with rest of Kashmir.
“These passes are usually opened during mid April. However due to the Lok Sabha elections all the three passes have been duly cleared before commencement of the poll. Beacon constantly worked in inclement weather condition and has opened all the passes in area of responsibility of 32 BRTF,” Col Mukesh Commander 32 BRTF said, adding this has resulted in smooth conduct of Lok Sabha poll.
