Srinagar, Nov 29: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president, Mehbooba Mufti, today accused the BJP of trampling democracy by trying to install their “puppets who are working as their B team”.
Addressing a press conference in Srinagar today, she said that BJP is trying to create an undemocratic ecosystem in J&K. “The BJP is trying to create an ecosystem where there is no place for the democracy and they want to install their puppets who are working as their B team here and that’s why you see how are they working hard for the DDC elections, and if we would not have participated in the elections, they would have called us Pakistanis”, she added.

Mehbooba accused BJP of making fun of democracy by disallowing opponents to campaign in the elections. “People are not being allowed to do the campaigning, what sort of elections are these? They have made fun of the democracy and there is no rule of law in the country. Their weapon has become the UAPA. Muslims are being labelled as Pakistanis and the Sikhs are being labelled as Khalistani, activists are urban Naxals and the students are tukde tukde gang for them”, she said.
The PDP president accused BJP of creating problems for their candidates in campaigning. “They are creating problems, our candidates do not have security and those who want to go and campaign without security, they are not being allowed to go out. This is not done. This country will not work on the agenda of 370”, she added.
“Nine out of 10 times, the Ministers and others from the BJP talk about Article 370, and we are being told not to talk about it. And when they know that the Article 370 is not going to come back, what rattles them when I talk about it?”, she asked.
Mehbooba accused the BJP of choking voices of people. “I am being told that I am provoking people. They want to ban my party as I talk about issues. When we said that we will participate in the elections, the suppression and other things started to gain the ground. There is no space for raising one’s voice”, she added.
She questioned the presence of 9 lakh troops in J&K even after abrogation of Article 370. “The poll percentage does not state anything; we have seen such turnout before as well. It will not change the reality of Kashmir problem. We have 9 lakh troopers here if there is no problem after the abrogation of 370. Kashmir problem has been there, and it will remain there until its resolution through talks with Pakistan and Kashmiris”, she said.
The PDP president accused BJP of dividing the country. “I fail to understand that if everyone is anti-national, terrorist, then who is the real Hindustani-just BJP? Since they have come to the power, they have done nothing but dividing this country”, she asked.
She also accused the BJP of making the UAPA as their weapon for harassing people. “It has become a routine that if they do not find any evidence against people, they are booking them under UAPA as there is no bail, only jail”, she said.
She said that Roshni is not a scam but a scheme while actual scam is electoral bonds which is brushed under carpet. “While we were suffering from all this, they brought in Roshni. It was a scheme and they turned it into a scam. Their actual scam is the issue of electoral bonds, the Supreme Court is not even hearing that case, why don’t they open that?”, she asked.
“Roshni was a law which was passed when the National Conference was in the power and was implemented when Azad sahib was the CM. If anybody has legalized their land as per the law, how is that even a scam?” she asked.
She also accused the BJP of making misuse of use of institution of courts which was otherwise last hope of people. “It is unfortunate that now what they are not able to do themselves, they put the courts in front of them. They are doing it all through courts-which used to be the last resort for the poor people who are now getting notices”, she said.
“The institutions which should have protected the democracy, they take the oath under the Constitution, but they are implementing BJP’s agenda in total. They are at the forefront of doing that. The opposition in the country appears to be dead silent”, she said.
Mehbooba said that she is under scanner. “I have been under the scanner for long now, there is hardly any bank account of mine which has not been looked into, the files in the Secretariat have been tossed around in an attempt to find any adverse, but they have failed in doing that as they did not find anything”, she said.
