JAMMU, June 1: To commemorate the 43rd death anniversary of Amar Nath Bhagat, a great leader of 70s, who remained on hunger fast in Municipal Park, opposite Civil Secretariat, Jammu, and made supreme sacrifice of his life on June 1, 1970, while demanding implementation of reservation for SCs in the State, BJP Anusuchit Jaati Morcha organised a programme at Jammu on Saturday.
BJP leaders including State President Jugal Kishore Sharma, leader of the Legislative Party Ashok Khajuria, BJP National Executive Member Dushyant Gautam, Morcha State President Surinder Bhagat and other leaders took part in the havan and later paid floral tributes to the noble soul.
Jugal Kishore Sharma, while paying tributes, said that it is indeed unfortunate that people in our State have always been forced to come on streets, observe hunger strikes and lay down their lives for the rights which have been granted to them under the Constitution but remain deprived of the same on one pretext or the other. He said that Amar Nath Bhagat did a great service to the community by showing a path to weaker sections that every right can not be achieved by just making demand but one should be ready to sacrifice his life.
Ashok Khajuria said that Amar Nath Bhagat laid down his life to fulfill the dream of Baba Sahib Dr B R Ambedkar, who wanted that the members of the SC community be socially and economically uplifted. He said that the Constitution of India granted the reservation to the SCs but these benefits were not extended till 1970 in J&K and the sacrifice of Bhagat brought fruits when the Government implemented the reservation here.
Surinder Bhagat, said that the real tribute to this leader would be to construct a statue in his memory and declare holiday on June 1, the day when he attained supreme sacrifice.
