JAMMU, Aug 17:  To express anger and resentment over the manifold increase in the price of onion, a massive protest was held by BJP Mahila Morcha activists under the leadership of Morcha State President Priya Sethi here at Chowk Chabutra, today.
The Morcha activists were raising slogans against the Government for its total failure to control the price of onion.
Priya Sethi, while holding the Congress-led UPA Government responsible for the steep hike in the price of onion, said that the poor people were already suffering on account of the rise in the prices of numerous food items and now the onion price is bringing tears even in the eyes of middle class women. In the past, the onion used to bring tears while some one cut it with knife but now just thinking to buy onion is bringing tears as its price has gone up by 45 per cent during the last two weeks. The onion has become a dream commodity now. A housewife can’t even dream now of bringing it in the kitchen due to its exorbitant price, she added.
Priya Sethi said that a housewife plays very important role in managing kitchen and ensure at least minimum food items to the family members but as of now the onion has gone totally out of the reach of a kitchen of a common family. She said that there is widespread anger and resentment among all sections of the society but the Union Government is sleeping over the issue.
She said the people are coming on roads and holding protests but the Government is promoting export of onion, which otherwise is needed to be made available in the country. She appealed the UPA Government to wake up, listen to the cries of people and take immediate effective steps to bring down the price of onion to such a level that it can be within the reach of every one. She also asked the NC-Congress Coalition Government in the State to make available onion to the people on subsidised rates.
