LOS ANGELES, Nov 10: Animated superhero-comedy-drama ‘Big Hero 6’ has soared past Mathew McConaughey-starrer ‘Interstellar’ in the box office race this weekend.
The Disney animation took in an estimated USD 56.2 million while the Christopher Nolan sci-fi film pulled in approximately USD 52.2 million including the limited release, reported Ace Showbiz.
“It’s just ahead of what we said we thought we’d do coming into the weekend. It sets us up in a really great way for a run ahead,” said Dave Hollis, Disney’s head of distribution.
Telling the story of a brilliant robotics prodigy, ‘Big Hero 6’ continued the history of animation triumph over live-action movie in the USD 50 million plus opening range.
‘Wall-E’, ‘Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted’ and ‘Monsters University’ all won over ‘Wanted (2008)’, ‘Prometheus’ and ‘World War Z’ respectively.
Meanwhile, ‘Interstellar’ benefited a lot from screening on IMAX. It took in USD 13.4 million on 368 screens with a per-screen average of more than USD 36,000.
Meanwhile, ‘Gone Girl’, ‘Ouija’ and ‘St Vincent’ completed the top 5 box office position this weekend.
In its sixth week, ‘Gone Girl’ managed to add approximately USD 6.1 million closely followed by ‘Ouija’ at around USD 6 million.
‘St Vincent’, that started off in limited theaters, brought in an estimated USD 5.7 million. (PTI)
