JAMMU, Dec 25: The former Minister of State for Defence and MLA Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta has termed it a dangerous trend that in 2013 the belt forces in J&K have suffered more casualties than elimination of terrorists. This has been for the first time after the break out of Pak-sponsored armed militancy in 1989, he added.
Commenting on the reports that in 2013, so for 87 jawans and officers have been martyred and many other injured against the elimination of only 77 terrorists, Prof. Gupta said that this sad situation needs a look by the authorities at Centre that how and why the men in khaki have come to suffered such losses, especially when earlier for over 22 years of proxy war, the ultras were at the receiving end.
He said on an average four terrorists were neutralized after the sacrifice of a jawan. But new trend is quite alarming as this is bound to have encouragement to terror, extremism and secessionist mentality, in addition to bearing on the morale of the forces. He stressed for a review of the policies that have led to such a situation and increased violence, both inside as also along Line of Control and the Jammu border.
Prof. Gupta assailed those who have been talking about for lowering of the guards and curtailing the powers of the terror fighting forces. He also pleaded for resuming of flush out operations against militants, especially in the Winter months as in the past years because prevailing approach has proved quite detrimental to the peace and even to put a check on the brokers of extremism.
Prof. Gupta regretted that right from Prime Minister to other high ups at the Centre are talking about the increasing threat of terrorism but on the ground little practical is being done to curb the menace which have already done a great harm and consumed so many human lives.
