Srinagar, Feb 6: A mob led by Panchayat members allegedly thrashed a Block Development Officer (BDO) and other employees and ransacked his office in Kokernag area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district reportedly over non-allotment of public works under various schemes including MGNREGA.
BDO Kokernag, Rashid Raina said a mob of 40 persons led by Panchayat members including a Sarpanch and a Panch broke out into his office and ransacked it. “Without saying anything, the mobsters beat me and my employees mercilessly. They even threatened to burn down my office and tore down some important documents,” he said.
The BDO said his employees fear for their lives and sought security. “We have lodged an FIR against these mobsters,” he said.
The incident triggered a protest by locals and they demanded stern action against the mobsters. “These goons make wrong use of their power. They only want to fill their pockets. They are supported by some of the political parties. They are not our representatives and have been installed by people with vested interests,” said Mohammad Rafiq Malik, a local protester.
Station House Officer (SHO) Kokernag, Tariq Tak confirmed the registration of a case and said the probe has been launched into the incident.
