In a meeting of the Association  held here today, under the chairmanship of  Sub Maj Ramesh Sargotra, the members discussed the present scenario of the Batwal community members putting up in urban, rural and hilly areas and urged the Government of India to sanction a ‘special package’ in their favour as per the  survey report of their ethnographic study.
Association president,  Sat Paul Lakhotra (Ex-MLA)  stated that in 1994, the Government of India with an object to ameliorate the living standard of the Batwal community members, launched a  study to assess their socio- economic and cultural life in the J&K State. Thereafter, the then Deputy Registrar General, India visited the State and exchanged the views with the elite of the Batwal Community to explore the ethnographic/anthropological back ground and other related details and also collected the Survey Report from the Directorate of Census Operations, J&K. But even after passage of twenty one years, nothing has been done by the Government for the amelioration of the Batwal community members.
The meeting also discussed the memorandum which had recently been forwarded to the Chief Minister’s Secretariat by the Governor House and urged the Chief Minister to initiate an early action in the matter. The Association members also urged the Chief Minister to discuss the matter with regard to reservation in promotions in the State Cabinet. They maintained that the reserved categories have not yet reached at par with other communities.
