JAMMU, Jan 6: Public sector banks employees including officers held protest demonstration at Shalamar Chowk near Punjab National Bank here today.
The employees under the banner of Jammu province Bank Employees Federation led by Arun Gupta, general secretary of the Federation, assembled at Shalamar Chowk and held protest demonstration in support of their demands.
Mr Gupta while addressing the gathering declared that on the call given by All India Bank Employees Association, the employees of all the Public sector banks would observe complete strike on January 7. It will be followed by strike programme from January 21 to 24, 2015. He alleged that despite repeated requests and many representations, the Government has failed to settle the pay revision issue of the bank employees.  He said the bank business has doubled in last five years,  and in the absence of adequate recruitment, the employees are under heavy pressure of work. Moreover, the Government is implementing many schemes through banks  and this also adds to the burden of bad loans.
Ashwani Pardhan, another trade Unionist said that Government’s decision to split chairman post and MD post in bank; right from 1969 since nationalization, Banks have a chairman- cum-MD. Recently PSB’s have been posted with two or three EDs adding to the administrative tier in the banks and there are many examples of class of interest. The chairman would be an outsider and become another power centre in the banks. It appears that Govt  wants to pack the banks with their own people and AIBEA is opposed to this move, Pardhan added.
He appealed all the bank employees to observe complete strike tomorrow.
Meanwhile, United Forum of Bank Unions  and Punjab National Bank Officers Association (J&K) has urged upon the bank employees to observe complete strike on January 7, 2015 in support of their main demand of pay revision. The staff of RBI has also decided to participate in the strike programme. The Association also fully supported the 4-day strike programme from January 21 to 24 and indefinite strike from March 16 this year.
