JAMMU, Apr 12: Jammu and Kashmir Border Area Development Conference (JK-BADC), a registered organization working for the welfare of border residents and tribal population in Jammu & Kashmir, has requested the Government of India and of Jammu and Kashmir administration to introduce a special insurance scheme for people living in villages along the International Border and the Line of Control.
In a statement, JKBADC Chairman, Dr Shazad Ahmed Malik said that thousands of families residing in border belt continue to live under constant uncertainty due to cross-border shelling, sudden displacement, damage to houses, loss of livestock and destruction of crops. Despite facing such risks for decades, there is presently no dedicated insurance mechanism to protect the lives and property of border residents.
Dr Malik, a former Vice Chancellor observed that villages located in districts like Poonch, Rajouri, Kathua, Jammu and Samba and few districts of Kashmir frequently witness disruptions whenever tensions escalate along the borders. He stated that border residents have been living in difficult conditions for many years and deserve institutional support from the Government. Malik said that the introduction of a Government supported insurance policy covering accidental death, injury, house damage, livestock loss and crop destruction would provide a sense of security and stability to families residing in these sensitive areas.
Malik urged the authorities to consider this proposal as part of a broader policy for the welfare and protection of border residents.
