Babri Masjid demolition case: CBI seeks criminal conspiracy charges against accused

NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation today sought that the criminal conspiracy charges should be initiated in the Babri Masjid demolition case against many accused persons, including several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders.

Initiating the arguments before the Supreme Court, counsel for the probe agency, Niraj Kishan Kaul, told a division bench that there are two trials going on in the case simultaneously in Rai Bareli and Lucknow.

Mr Kaul submitted that 195 witnesses had already been examined in Lucknow trial court and  approximately 700 or more to be examined.  In the other case, in Rai Bareli court, 57 witnesses had already been examined and 100 or more are likely to be examined in the case.

The bench, headed by Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose and also comprising Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman, questioned Mr Kaul about the facts and circumstances of the case.

Mr Kaul contended that 14 persons,  including Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders,  who were acquitted of the charges under criminal conspiracy should be tried in Lucknow Court in the Babri Masjid demolition case.

The CBI lawyer, however, has not told the apex court yet that who are the BJP leaders to be tried for criminal conspiracy charges in the Babri Masjid demolition case.  The arguments are still continuing.
