‘There should be no discrimination on basis of religion’

RAJOURI, Apr 30: Stressing on unity among the different communities and sections of society in J&K, Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), chairperson and former Chief Minister of erstwhile State of J&K and Ladakh, Ghulam Nabi Azad said that he will continue to work for the welfare and betterment of people of the country irrespective of their religion, region or caste.

Talking to reporters at Nowshera near here today, during his tour of Rajouri -Poonch districts for canvassing for his party candidate from Anantnag-Rajouri constituency, Advocate Mohammed Maqbool Parrey. Azad ruled out joining any political alliance and said “I will neither go left nor right as I have to work for common masses irrespective of their religion, caste and region. I have always served the people of all communities including Hindus , Muslims and Sikhs and I will continue to do that as all of them are creatures of God and hence we should not discriminate among them on the basis of their religion, region or caste’’.

Azad will start campaigning in Rajouri district from tomorrow by holding public rallies at different places for his party candidate to seek vote for his party.
Azad said this period of the year is not conducive for holding elections in J&K as mostly rains and snow lash the upper reaches of UT during this season. He said the people deciding the date of elections in Delhi are not familiar about the climatic conditions in J&K and it has been always seen that inclement weather conditions prevail in the UT of J&K in March and April months as the higher reaches experience snowfall while rains lash the plain areas resulting in closure of Highways and roads for days together.
Azad said the topography and geographical conditions of J&K are altogether different from other parts of the country and hence the poll dates which are feasible for other parts of the country can’t be right for J&K.
He said it takes about three days and two nights to reach from one district to another in Anantnag-Rajouri constituency whose geographical area is equivalent to five or six Parliamentary constituencies of Uttar Pradesh (UP). The Anantnag –Rajouri constituency has an area of thousands of sq kilometers so it takes days together to travel from its one part to another part, he added.
Azad said after a leader holding public meeting in Anantnag can’t visit Rajouri or Poonch in the same day and in rainy season the situation is also horrible and worst as roads and highways get closed for days together. Moreover, the Dakbungalows are occupied by the staff of the Election Commission so where the leaders and their security personnel can stay, he added.
Azad said it is not possible for everyone to hire a chopper and the chopper also cannot take off in bad weather conditions in the hilly reaches. With heavy rains continuing for last three days it is difficult for political leaders and people to take part in rallies and public meetings, he added.
