Avalanche hits Siachen; 6 dead, 2 rescued

Sringar, Nov 18: Four soldiers and two porters died and other two were rescued as they were trapped under snow avalanche that hit troops of an Army unit in Siachen Glacier in Ladakh region this afternoon.
Six Army personnel and 2 porters were swept by an avalanche at around 3.30 p.m in Northern part of the Glacier. The soldiers and porters were burined under snow.
Army rescue teams launched a major rescue and recovery operations in the area during which all the eight persons were pulled out of snow avalanche.
They were taken to nearby military health facility where four soldiers and two porters were declared dead. The death has been caused by extreme hypothermia. The other two soldiers are under treatment.
The avalanche took place in the Northern Glacier at an altitude of 19,000 feet. The avalanche hit the Glacier when 1-Dogra regiment of the Army was replacing 1-Punjab regiment.
