Scenes of people riding the Aqua Cycle-similar to cycling on the road-are unique, as it enables people to venture beyond the banks of the lake, allowing them to experience the sensation of observing things from a distance and depth.
“We needed it here because we have water bodies that facilitate the effective functioning of these recreational activities. I saw such things elsewhere, and that’s where I got the idea of replicating it here,” said Tahzeem, Manager of the Aqua Cycle recreational activity.
With the novel recreational activity starting nearly ten days ago, he mentioned that the response has been immense from both locals and tourists, who are enjoying it and experiencing the beauty of Dal in a different manner.
“People are learning about it, and with each passing day, the response is increasing. People are thoroughly enjoying it.”
Previously, such scenes were only possible when people hired a shikara, which would take them away from the banks towards the middle of the lake. However, that short journey came at a cost, along with other risks.
An Aqua Cycle, also known as a water bike or hydrobike, is a type of watercraft designed for recreational use on lakes, rivers, and other calm bodies of water. It typically resembles a bicycle with pontoons or floats attached to provide buoyancy and stability.
Regarding the charges and duration of the ride, he stated that they are charging Rs 200 per person for a half-hour ride, and two people can ride the Aqua Cycle at a time.
“The duration has been set at half an hour considering that it might bore people if it exceeded that time; within half an hour, people enjoy it thoroughly.”
Regarding safety, he assured that they are ensuring all necessary safety measures are in place, including providing life-saving jackets to those who ride the Aqua Cycle.
Just as the Tourism Department provided necessary assistance in setting up other recreational activities on the waters of Dal, Tahzeem mentioned they were also assisted similarly.
“They helped us and provided the necessary permissions in this regard. We have also introduced water zorbing, which is also receiving encouraging feedback.”
On the other hand, while tourists are excited to explore the beauty of the lake in a different manner, locals are also pleased with the changes taking place.
“It used to be just the shikara or the houseboat for us, but now things are changing as new means and ways of enjoying and experiencing the beauty of Dal are emerging,” said Wasim Ahmad, a local.
