Apsara road goes vehicle free on Sunday as Rotary Club organizes ‘Big Street’

JAMMU, Mar 6: It was altogether a different Sunday for Jammuites who woke up amid rain to a vehicle-free Apsara road.
The occasion was “Big Street” organized jointly by Rotary Club Jammu Tawi and 92.7 BIG FM where the ever busy Apsara Road was kept vehicle-free till afternoon and was open to public to pursue any sports, fitness and curricular activities on the road apart from shopping and enjoying food stalls and free haircuts by OSIS.
The people of Jammu made the most out of it and even after being a rainy morning, started gathering at the venue from 7 am.
Talking about the concept, the president of Rotary Club, Jammu Tawi, Ashok Gupta gave the reference of metro cities like Delhi, Bangalore and many more where on Sundays some roads are kept vehicle free and they are dedicated to people for their fitness and it serves another purpose of bringing the pollution levels down to some extent.
Vikrant Sharma, Programming Head, 92.7 BIG FM, also added that Big Street is all about opening street to people, sharing resources, transforming communities. He further added that it will be a milestone crafted to galvanize the citizens to participate in a shared vision of an active and vehicle-free lifestyle.
The morning started with a Yog Session by Art of Living followed by Zumba by Shape n Smile, Street Play in Dogri ‘Teethh’ by Rangyug- a Theatre Group for Social Change, Bhangra by Pubjab Virsa- a dance group from Pathankot, special performances by winners of Big Power Girls (held in February by 92.7 BIG FM)- Sushmita and Ankita, Tug-of-war, cycling, skating and many more activities.
Many prizes were awarded to the public in different fun contests held throughout the event. Certificates were also given to the participants.
Many dignitaries of the State like DG, Co-ordination, S K Mishra, ADG, J&K Police, Dilbagh Singh, Chief Electoral Officer, J&K, Shantmanu, Commissioner Secretary, Forest, Rakesh Gupta, DC Jammu Simrandeep Singh and ADG Jammu, Arun Jamwal, graced the occasion with their presence.
Many veteran Rotarians were also present during the event along with RJs of BIG FM- RJ Juhie, Manas and Sarang.
