JAMMU, July 24: Army last night thwarted another infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC), second in as many days, in Balakote sector of Poonch district forcing the militants to retreat to Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) from where they had been launched into this side.
Official sources said the troops observed movement of a group of six to eight militants trying to move toward India side of the LoC from Balakote Forward in Poonch district at 9.30 pm last night. Troops opened firing aiming the direction the militants were taking to intrude into the Indian territory. The firing continued for about 40 minutes.
The militants retreated after finding the troops alert on this side.
Sources didn’t rule out the possibility of the militant group being the same, which had tried to infiltrate on the intervening night of July 22 and 23 from Tarkundi forward area in Balakote sector of Poonch district. Troops had foiled the intrusion bid successfully in Tarkundi also.
Two infiltration attempts have been made in Balakote and Balakote Forward sectors during past two days but finding the Army on high alert on the LoC, the militants had retreated to PoK.
According to sources, the militants were trying to take advantage of adverse weather conditions on the LoC in view of heavy rains to sneak into this side but hadn’t succeeded.
