SRINAGAR, June 7: Amar Singh Club, Srinagar, today held a condolence meeting in memory of its member, Dr Javid Iqbal, who passed away on June 4, and announced the institution of the annual Dr Javid Iqbal Memorial Lecture to honour his legacy and contributions to society.
The meeting was attended by members of the club and family members of the late Dr Javid Iqbal, including his brother Sohail Iqbal.
A one-minute silence was observed and special Fateh prayers were offered by Syed Shakeel Qalander.
Welcoming the participants, Club Secretary Nasir Hamid Khan described Dr Javid Iqbal as one of the club’s strongest pillars whose absence would be deeply felt.
He said Dr Javid was a distinguished professional, intellectual, lover of Kashmiri culture and a compassionate human being who touched countless lives through his wisdom, wit and dedication to society.
Recalling his participation in the Club’s “Common Interest Conversations” programme in January 2025 despite battling cancer, Khan said Dr Javid remained determined and optimistic throughout his illness.
He noted that the discussion had inspired him to resume writing and led to the publication of his thought-provoking column on public discourse and civic engagement.
Emphasizing Dr Javid’s belief in meaningful debate and public participation, Khan announced the institution of the annual Dr Javid Iqbal Memorial Lecture.
The annual event will invite eminent scholars, thinkers and professionals to speak on subjects that were close to Dr Javid’s heart and will help preserve and promote his intellectual legacy.
A special message from the United States by Dr Ghulam Qadir Allaqaband was also read out.
In his message, Dr Allaqaband recalled Dr Javid’s deep knowledge of literature, philosophy, Islamic history and Persian language, and praised his commitment to social service, particularly through Care Kashmir International.
Rich tributes were paid by Senior Advocate Zaffar A Shah, Saleem Beig, Dr Altaf Hussain, GN War, Abdul Majeed Zargar, Syed Shakeel Qalander, Zareef Ahmad Zareef, Prof Hamida Nayeem, Qurat-ul-Ain, Amir Sohail Wani, Advocate Bashir Sidique and Saif Sohail.
Speakers remembered Dr Javid Iqbal for his intellect, social commitment, empathy, scholarship and his unwavering faith in dialogue as a means to address public issues.
