Amanath yatra going on smoothly, 2.96 lakh pay obeisance

SRINAGAR :   Fresh batches of pilgrims left Baltal and Nunwan Pahalgam base camp for the holy Amarnath Cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas, where about 2.92 lakh pilgrims paid obeisance since the commencement of the 59-day-long pilgrimage from July 2.
Weather was pleasant and yatra was going on smoothly from Nunwan Pahalgam and Baltal, where life returned to normal after cloud burst on Friday evening, which left four people dead and about a dozen others wounded.
Though the Ganderbal-Sonmarg and Baltal road was closed after the cloud burst cause damage at four places, a large number of yatris reached the base camp after covering the distance on foot.      We allowed the yatris who had reached Baltal on foot for the cave shrine this morning, a Yatra Control Room (YCR) official said.
Since some more yatris are still arriving from Manigam and Sumbal transit camps,  the exact number of pilgrims undertaking the yatra from Baltal today will be known later, he said.
He said pilgrims, including women and sadhus also left Nunwan Pahalgam base camp early this morning for next halting station, Chandanwari, the last motorable station on traditional yatra route. Similarly yatris who had night halt at Chandanwari, Pisso Top, Sheshnag and Panchterni have also started their foot journey towards the cave shrine early this morning.
Yatra official said 4632 pilgrims paid obeisance at the holy cave shrine yesterday. With this a total of 295575 yatris had darshan of the Ice Shivlingam at the holy cave shrine at 13500 feet since July 2. (AGENCIES)
