SRINAGAR, Apr 15: BJP J&K spokesman, Altaf Thakur, who termed the ribbon controversy at Kashmir Haat as an act “deeply insensitive and unacceptable” demanded stern punishment to the officer involved in the disrespect to the National Flag.
In a strongly worded statement, Thakur said the Tiranga, a symbol of India’s pride, unity, and the sacrifices of countless martyrs, must never be reduced to a ceremonial object. “Using the National Flag as a ribbon to be cut during an inauguration reflects a serious lack of understanding and respect for its sanctity,” he said and demanded immediate arrest of the official involved.
He, however, appreciated the Chief Minister for refusing to cut the ribbon, stating that the decision upheld the dignity of the National Flag. “The Chief Minister’s refusal sends a powerful message that national symbols are above protocol and ceremonial practices. It reflects a deep sense of responsibility and respect towards the Tiranga,” Thakur added.
Launching a scathing attack on the officials involved, Thakur demanded immediate suspension and strict action against those responsible. “This is not a minor oversight but a grave lapse or a deliberate attempt. The officers who allowed or designed such an act must be identified and suspended without delay. Exemplary punishment is necessary to ensure that such incidents are not repeated,” he asserted.
Thakur emphasized that respecting the National Flag is a fundamental duty, especially for those in public service. He called on the administration to fix accountability and issue clear guidelines to prevent any misuse of national symbols in the future.
The incident has triggered a wider debate on the proper use and respect of national symbols, with calls for stricter adherence to established norms.
