JAMMU, Jan 4: All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC), the leading organization of over 33,000 elected Panchayat members has decided to hold one day Panchayat empowerment convention at Jammu to put forth their demands of strengthening Panchayati Raj institutions in the State.
While chairing a meeting of elected Panchayat representatives of district Samba, Anil Sharma, the president of the Panchayat body after having long deliberations with the participating members announced that on January 17, the AJKPC shall hold one day Panchayat convention at Jammu and it would be open for all elected Panches and Sarpanches of the State.
The meeting was organized by district Samba unit of the Panchayat Conference to discuss various issues related to different Panchayat Halqas of the area and to chalk out strategy to ensure providing adequate empowerment of the Panchayati Raj institutions.
In his address, Anil Sharma assured them that All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference is committed for the cause of 33,000 Panchayat members and 80 percent (rural) population of the State. He also urged the State Government to make necessary amendments in the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act before the Panchayat elections to ensure decentralization of powers in true sense.
He said Panchayat elections should not be just to take Central funds and then render the elected Panchayat members helpless and PRIs defunct. Several other Sarpanches also spoke on the occasion and unanimously resolved to continue their untiring struggle for strengthening grass- root level democracy in the State.
