JAMMU, Mar 4: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha today took first dose of COVID-19 vaccine in the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu and called upon all eligible persons to take the jab saying it’s fully safe while a Government School Lecturer in Bishnah and a 12th class student in private school at Channi Himmat tested positive for the virus after which the private school has been closed for three days for testing of contacts.
Sinha reached the GMC Jammu at 9 am and was given first dose of COVID-19 vaccine ‘Covishield’ by a Nurse of the GMC Jammu in the presence of Principal Dr Shashi Sudhan Sharma and Medical Superintendent Dr Dara Singh.

The Nurse explained to the Lieutenant Governor that he will have to take second dose of the vaccine after 28 days and stay for half an hour in the GMC Jammu’s Observ-ation room besides taking all COVID precautions which he was already taking.
Sinha stayed in the Observa-tion room for half an hour before leaving the GMC Jammu.
Advisor Incharge Health and Medical Education Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar also took the COVID jab in the GMC Jammu today.
“I have taken the vaccine today. It was a smooth process. I urge all the eligible persons to come forward and get the jab. The vaccine is safe and I congratulate all the scientists who manufactured it,” Sinha said after getting the vaccine.
He also appealed to the people not to lower their guard and take all COVID related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) even after getting vaccinated.
The Lieutenant Governor said the world has acknowledged ingenuity of the Indian scientists. He expressed his gratitude to frontline workers including doctors and other health personnel, who led a formidable fight against Coronavirus pandemic.
Meanwhile, one Lecturer and a student tested positive for COVID-19 in Jammu district today.
A 17-year-old 12th class student of Jodhamal Public School at Channi Himmat, who hails from Nanak Nagar, today tested positive for COVID-19.
After getting a report, the School Management ordered closure of the institution for three days from March 5-7.
“Today afternoon, a parent of 12th class student informed Jodhamal Public School that their ward had tested COVID positive. The student had briefly visited school on Ist and 2nd March for practical practice. Before that, she came for pre-Board exams up to February 19. As a precautionary measure, the school has been closed for next three days. All precautions and SOPs were and are being followed in the school as per the Government guidelines,” a spokesperson for the institution said.
The School Principal has also submitted a report to the District Magistrate Jammu giving details about the student found infected by the virus.
The Principal said all classmates of the student and concerned teachers have been informed to get their COVID test done.
Meanwhile, a female Lecturer in the Government Higher Secondary School for Boys in Bishnah has also tested positive for COVID-19.
The teacher was reportedly on leave. In view of this, the school hasn’t been shut. However, students and teachers who had come in contact with the infected Lecturer when she last visited the school were subjected to COVID testing and all of them reported negative for the virus.
Meanwhile, one person died of COVID-19 while 79 tested positive for the virus and 70 others recovered in Jammu and Kashmir today.
Jammu region reported 14 fresh cases of Coronavirus, 12 in Jammu district and two in Kathua. Rest eight districts didn’t report any new cases today.
Nine persons recovered from the virus in the Jammu region including six in Jammu district, two Kathua and one in Udhampur district.
Rajouri and Ramban districts didn’t have any Corona positive cases presently.
Jammu region now has 52045 Corona cases. Among them, 194 are active positives while 51126 have recovered from the virus and there have been 725 casualties in the region.
Among the casualties, the highest of 373 have been reported in Jammu district followed by 64 Doda, 57 Udhampur, 55 Rajouri, 53 Kathua, 40 Samba, 24 Poonch, 22 Kishtwar, 21 Ramban and 16 in Reasi district.
Meanwhile, Kashmir today reported 65 cases of COVID-19 while one person died of Coronavirus in the Valley taking the death toll to 1959.
Those who tested positive include 46 from Srinagar, 6 Baramulla, 5 Budgam, 3 Pulwama, 1 Anantnag, 1 Ganderbal, 1 Kulgam and 1 from Shopian.
The number of cases in Kashmir division has reached 74,727 including 72,804 recoveries and 1,234 deaths.
The number of active cases in Jammu and Kashmir are 883 including 689 from Kashmir division.
With 70 more recoveries, the tally of total recoveries in Jammu and Kashmir has reached 123,930, which is 97.78 percent of the total cases.
Meanwhile, the UT of Ladakh today reproted three new corona positive cases including two in Leh in one in Kargil district. Ladakh now has 43 active positive cases.
