Major relief for students

LEH, Sept 6: The administration of the Union Territory of Ladakh today ordered that the Scheduled Tribe (ST) certificate would be considered as a valid ID proof of domicile of Ladakh for students.
This has been done with the view of facilitating the students of Ladakh to apply for the Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS) for the academic year 2021-22.
The order issued by Secretary of Higher Education Department Padma Angmo stated, “To facilitate the students of Ladakh to apply for Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme for the Academic Session 2021-22, it has been decided that the Scheduled Tribe certificate issued by the concerned Tehsildars shall be considered as valid proof of domicile of Ladakh.”
The order further stated that candidates applying for the scheme can upload the ST certificate in place of domicile certificate specified in the guidelines of PMSSS 2021-22.
The order will bring major relief to the students desirous of applying for admissions under the Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme.
Only a day before, the Union Territory of Ladakh administration had ordered that Permanent Resident Certificate (PRC) holders in Ladakh will be treated as ‘Permanent Residents’ of the Union Territory temporarily for the purpose of recruitment in non-Gazetted posts of the UT.
The PRCs were issued to permanent residents of undivided State of Jammu and Kashmir. After abrogation of Special Status of the erstwhile State and its bifurcation into two Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh, the PRCs were abolished.
Jammu and Kashmir got domicile certificates covering PRC holders and some other categories.
The Administration of Union Territory of Ladakh had recently enhanced the upper age limit for entry into Government services against all posts meant for direct recruitment other than those pertaining to Gazetted officers.
The upper age limit has been enhanced for the reserved category candidates from 43 years to 45 years, for the general category candidates from 40 to 42 years and for the physically challenged candidates from 42 to 44 years.
Sources pointed out that defining the Resident of the Union Territory of Ladakh will help the administration to advertise posts in the Non-Gazetted cadre in the UT and redress grievances of the youth who were agitated over such a prolonged delay in recruitment of posts in the absence of Resident certificate.
