SRINAGAR, Nov 21: Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Farooq Ahmad Shah, has formed eight special squads in Srinagar city to implement the Jammu and Kashmir High Court order on stopping operations of over 100 hotels that are violating pollution norms, an official spokesman said here.
The spokesman said here that these squads will snap the electricity and water supply and suspend the registration of 108 hotels that are violating the pollution norms including those that have been taken by the Government for its employees and security forces.
Earlier the Jammu and Kashmir High Court had directed the DC Srinagar to ensure that the hotels violating pollution norms should stop operations. Yesterday, it asked the DC to implement the court order in letter and spirit and take the help of Director General of Police in implementation of the court order.
The spokesman said that the hoteliers have already given undertaking to the DC Srinagar that they have stopped their operations under the court directions. This they did after they were served notices to stop operations as per the court directions for violating the pollution norms.
The Court had directed that the hotels should install STPs and their efficiency should be monitored. Hoteliers, however, were of the opinion that there should be a common STP for a cluster of hotels. The State Cabinet last week gave its nod for the common STP asking the hoteliers to foot the bill.
The spokesman further said that the Station House Officers of various Police Stations in Srinagar city have been directed to ensure that the erring hotels falling in their area should suspend the operations. “The DC Srinagar and SSP Srinagar, Ashiq Bukhari, are monitoring the implementation of the court order”, the spokesman added.
