SRINAGAR, Mar 18: Hundreds of youth who were engaged by the previous Government on academic arrangement as teachers in schools today held massive protests here, demanding continuation of their service.
About 8000 such teachers, 5000 in Jammu and 3000 in Kashmir, were engaged by the NC-Congress Government last year for academic session on mere 3000 rupees remuneration per month.
But as the session ended, as per the signed contract their period also came to an end.
These protesting youths have high academic qualification, with hundreds having PhD degrees and some having qualified NET tests also.
“We studied hoping that we will get a decent livelihood. We cannot do manual labour as that is not suited for us,” Javiad Ahmad, one of the protesters said.
He said that their livelihood is totally dependent on the job of academics and if the new Government does not issue fresh orders of their continuation they will become jobless.
The protesters staged demonstration for half a day and insisted the new Government to decide about their present and future.
Director School Education Showkat Ahmad Beigh told Excelsior that the department cannot continue their services as per the agreement of their signed contract.
Beigh said it is upto the Government to decide about their continuation.
The agitated youth said the Government should frame a policy for the continuation of their services.
