JAMMU, Mar 17: Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation (TRCF) has demanded inclusion of nomadic tribes into Below Poverty Line (BPL) category.
Speaking at a function on the topic ‘Economic Issues of Nomadic Tribes of J&K-with special focus on Gujjars and Bakerwals’, Dr. Javaid Rahi of TRCF talked about hardships being faced by the Gujjars due to migratory way of life and demanded a survey on socio-economic status of nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes.
Rahi claimed that a large number of nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes remained out of the purview of social security schemes launched by the Government due to lack of awareness.

“Drop-out rate of school going children is extremely high among nomadic Gujjars and Bakerwal,” he said and demanded that such students of tribal community should be taken care of by utilising funds under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.
