Restrictions, strike paralyse life in Valley

Srinagar, July 13: Authorities today imposed curfew like restrictions in many parts of Kashmir to maintain law and order as a strike called by separatists disrupted normal life in the Valley.

Authorities imposed curfew like restrictions in parts of Srinagar and foiled a march by Mirwaiz to martyrs graveyard. The roads in the old city were sealed by Police and CRPF with the concertina wire, iron barricades and bunkers were also placed at vantage points to prevent any movement of vehicles and people.
Police and CRPF were patrolling the streets to enforce the restrictions and prevent any protests by separatists.
Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was detained by the police when he came out of his house and tried to march towards martyrs graveyard while Syed Ali Shah Geelani was placed under house arrest. Speaking on the occasion, before his detention, Mirwaiz asked the Government that how long will it continue this policy of restrictions on the people and separatist leadership of Kashmir.
Curfew was imposed in Shopian town of South Kashmir as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order. Curbs were also seen imposed in Anantnag, Pulwama and Kulgam districts.
Minor clashes were reported from several places of the Valley. In Pulwama town Police fired tear gas and live bullets to disperse the stone throwing protesters. A 14-year-old youth Sarosh Ahmad son of Ubaid Ahmad Wani of Chatapora was injured in the security forces firing.
Restrictions on the assembly of people were also imposed in Sopore and Handwara townships in north Kashmir.
In rest of the Valley, most of the shops, fuel stations and other business establishments were shut while public transport was thin on the roads.
Mobile internet remained suspended across the Valley, but BSNL’s broadband services were working intermittently.
In the meantime, the district administration in Srinagar has decided to impose restrictions in areas falling under the jurisdiction of seven Police Stations on Friday. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Farooq Ahmad Lone said that the restrictions under Section 144 will be imposed in areas falling under the jurisdiction of seven Police Station including Khanyar, Nowhatta, Rainawari, MR Gunj, Safakadal, Maisuma and Kralkhud. He said that the restrictions are being imposed as a precautionary measure.
In South Kashmir security forces cordoned off Dadsar village in Tral area and conducted searches after they received inputs about presence of militants in the village. However, militants had managed to escape before the cordon was laid by 42 RR of army and Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police.
