JAMMU, June 17: World Elders Abuse Awareness Day was observed by the Association for Welfare of Senior Citizens at Home for Aged and Infirm at Ambphalla.
This day is observed all over the world supported by the United Nations and the World Health Organizations. The day is observed to bring awareness amongst the younger generation, the civil society, various institutions and the Government to combat the Elders Abuse. The International Network for the Prevention of Elders Abuse (INPEA), a global body is dedicated to the cause of disseminating information on the prevention of Elders Abuse.
A very loud and clear message was given to the caretakers of the senior citizens as well as the Government to come forward and take steps to avoid elders abuse. Creation of Old Aged Homes, Dar Care Centres, Pay and Stay Homes for senior citizens are a few solutions. The State Government can either extend the Central Act of 2007 for Maintenance of Parents and Senior Citizens or enact its own Act on similar lines. The Social Welfare Department can establish Day Care Centres for which Central Government gives a liberal grant. Thus it is for the Government as well as the civil society to come forward in this respect.
An hour Bhajan Sandhya was arranged on the occasion for the inmates of the Home. The audience were given a brief on the importance of the day by Dr Patwari and a few tips to inmates by Syrensh Jain, which followed the distribution of Prasad.
A number of members of Association along with its president A K Arora, Vikram Gour its patron and R C Gupta general secretary along with president of the Home Prem Gupta were present on the occasion.
