Srinagar, Nov 5: Curfew-like restrictions that were imposed yesterday continued in parts of Srinagar and in rest of the Valley a separatist sponsored strike paralysed normal life.
A spokesman of the district administration said that restrictions were imposed in six police station areas of old city as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order.
The spokesman said that the restrictions were imposed in view of the call for strike given by the separatist groups.
Hurriyat Conference factions headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Shabir Ahmad Shah and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front had called for a strike to protest the killing of two youths in Army firing at Chattergam in Budgam district of the Valley on Monday. Two other youths were injured in the incident that led to widespread condemnation from various quarters, including the mainstream political parties.
The curfew like restrictions and strike affected normal life in the Valley with banks, shops, schools and other educational institutions remained closed. However, public transport was off the roads in most parts of the Valley, including the city but private vehicles were seen plying.
Stray incidents of stone pelting were reported from Nowgam area of Srinagar and in rest of the Valley situation remained peaceful.
Police and CRPF was heavily deployed in sensitive areas of the city and other major towns to prevent any clashes.
An Army official said: “Some vested interests are spreading rumours that the third person injured during Chattergam incident has succumbed. It is clarified that both are stable and doing fine.”
