SRINAGAR, May 16: Congress MLA and Party Observer Irfan Hafeez Lone today said the country needs a strong Congress party to effectively raise the voices of the people and counter what he termed as “divisive politics” and weakening of democratic institutions.
Addressing a press conference here at the party headquarters, Lone said strengthening the Congress organization was necessary to safeguard public interests and uphold democratic values.

“At this time, there is a need to strengthen the Congress party, which will in turn strengthen the voices of the people,” he said.
Lone said the party has launched the second phase of its nationwide “Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan” in J&K to strengthen the organization at the grassroots level.
He said the first phase involved the election of district presidents through a “transparent and democratic process,” while the upcoming phase will focus on constituting block committees, village committees and mandals.
He said observers and coordinators have been designated across all districts to ensure transparency in the process, in line with guidelines adopted during the AICC session in Ahmedabad.
Highlighting the Congress party’s historical role, Lone said the organization had fought for the country’s freedom and continued to make sacrifices even after independence.
“This organization fought against the British during the freedom struggle and has always made sacrifices for the nation,” he said, referring to former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
The Congress leader also targeted the BJP-led Centre, alleging that democratic institutions in the country had been weakened and that people in J&K were facing hardships after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 and the downgrading of the erstwhile state into a Union Territory.
“There is an atmosphere of dictatorship in the country. If anyone is fighting divisive politics and the ideology of the RSS, it is the Congress and Rahul Gandhi,” he said.
