Congress questions more emergency powers to LG

JAMMU, May 9: Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of deliberately creating political uncertainty and instability in Jammu and Kashmir, questioning the Centre’s move to further empower the Lieutenant Governor’s office with emergency powers, particularly to intercept messages.
Reacting to the recent developments and statements by BJP leaders, JKPCC chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma termed the move an assault on personal liberty and the right to privacy. He said granting sweeping powers to the nominated head of the Union Territory has deepened doubts among people who already feel betrayed over the delay in restoration of Statehood despite repeated commitments by the Centre.
Sharma said such powers, exercised in the name of security, could endanger citizens’ privacy and reflect the Centre’s unwillingness to restore statehood to J&K.
He also criticized recent remarks by BJP leaders regarding the stability of the Government, calling them against democratic norms and traditions. He alleged that BJP leaders were indulging in open bullying of political opponents and attempting to destabilize the elected Government in the sensitive region.
