Major crackdown on drug trade; peddlers arrested, poppy crop destroyed

jammu, May 2: Continuing its intensified crackdown under the 100-day “Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyan”, police in Ramban and Udhampur and Rajouri districts achieved major successes by arresting a repeat drug peddler and destroying illegal poppy cultivation.
In Ramban, District Police arrested a notorious female drug peddler identified as Shabnam Begum, wife of Mohd Younas and a resident of Ward No. 1 Ramban.
Acting on reliable information, police learned that the accused had allegedly concealed a charas-like substance at her residence for illegal sale among local youth.
A police team led by the SHO Ramban conducted a raid after registering FIR No. 98/2026 under Sections 8/20 of the NDPS Act.
During the search, police recovered approximately 97.95 grams of charas-like substance, a black polythene bag, and Rs 74,550 in cash, all of which were seized on the spot.
The accused was arrested and taken into custody.
Meanwhile, in Udhampur district, police arrested one person for illegal cultivation of opium/poppy in village Charat, Tehsil Chenani.
Acting on specific inputs, a police team from Police Station Udhampur, along with a revenue team, conducted a raid at the site.
The accused, identified as Jeet Singh, son of Beli Ram and a resident of Charat, was apprehended on the spot for cultivating banned opium/poppy on his land.
During the operation, nearly 15 marlas of land under illegal cultivation were identified, and the entire crop was destroyed immediately.
In this connection, FIR No. 176/2026 under Section 8/18 of the NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Udhampur, and further investigation is underway.
Police arrested two alleged drug peddlers in Thanamandi area and recovered a narcotic substance from their possession.
Acting on specific information about narcotics being sold to local youth, a police team from Police Station Thanamandi launched an operation in the Saaj area and apprehended the two accused.
During personal search conducted in the presence of a Magistrate, police recovered around 4.06 grams of heroin from them.
The contraband was seized and both accused were taken into custody.
A case under relevant sections of the NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Thanamandi. Police said further investigation is underway to trace the forward and backward links of the narcotics network.
