Srinagar, Apr 30: The AICC General Secretary and CLP leader Ghulam Ahmad Mir has urged Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to introduce a scheduled halt for the Vande Bharat Express at Anantnag railway station, citing inconvenience to passengers and rising demand in South Kashmir.
In a letter to the minister, Mir, who is also the Member of the Legislative Assembly from Dooru, said the absence of a stop at Anantnag is affecting a large section of the population, particularly students, traders, patients, and tourists who depend on faster rail connectivity.
Describing Anantnag as a major commercial and tourism hub, he noted that it serves as a gateway to destinations such as Pahalgam, Verinag, Daksum, and Kokernag, and caters to a wide catchment area including Kulgam, Shopian, and parts of Pulwama district.
Mir said a halt at Anantnag would improve regional connectivity, help decongest nearby stations, promote tourism in South Kashmir, and support local trade and economic growth.
He added that the station’s strategic location and high passenger footfall make it a viable stoppage for the premium train service.
In a statement, Mir expressed hope that the Railway Ministry would give due consideration to what he termed a “genuine public demand” in the larger interest of the people.
