SAMBA, Sept 27: The J&K unit of All India Jat Mahasabha (AIJM) today demanded OBC benefits for the Jats of the Union Territory at par with the Jats in 11 states of the country.
The demand was raised by Choudhary Manmohan Singh J&K, president of the Mahasabha, during a meeting held with community members at village Plura in tehsil Ghagwal. Choudhary said 90% of people of Jat community live on borders and they have to face losses on every front due to border disturbances. He said OBC benefits will help the community people to provide a better and stable future to their children as it will open doors of more jobs for them and access to better opportunities.
Choudhary Manmohan Singh said that border people are dependent on their lands and agriculture to earn their livelihood and have no other source of income other than their agricultural income, but these lands fall under border fencing area and remain uncultivated. “Government uses these lands for military purposes but fail to provide any kind of compensation for the loss of farmers,” he said and asked the authorities to provide alternate land to the farmers to cultivate and compensate them financially for all the years the Government has used these lands.
He also raised the issue of non-transfer of ownership rights of lands given to displaced people, stating that after migration from Chhamb area these displaced people were allotted 4 acre land but they are only the custodians of these lands and are still struggling to get legal ownership rights for these lands.
Singh said Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address in Srinagar had promised that these refugees will receive the amount of one-time settlement but only a partial payment of Rs 5.5 lakh from the settlement has been given to a certain part of the refugees and many families are still on waiting list. He requested LG Manoj Sinha to direct the concerned authorities to access the pending files and issue cheques to the beneficiaries.
