Div Com asks Red Cross to create pool of trained volunteers

SRINAGAR, May 13: To felicitate and pay tributes to the volunteers for their unprecedented contribution to the people in the need of hour, a function was organised by Divisional Red Cross Society, Kashmir at Red Cross House, here today.
Appreciating the role of the volunteers for their selfless efforts to provide succour to the people in need and to bridge the gap between the crisis and crisis management, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Shailendra Kumar emphasised the volunteers to make people aware about the measures for Disaster Management besides for the rehabilitation and relief during natural calamities. He said that volunteers being the ambassadors of Red Cross will encourage others to join the noble cause for the relief and respite of needy people.
Speaking about the vulnerability of State to natural disasters like earthquake and floods, the Divisional Commissioner said, “we have been able to control floods to some extent but earthquakes still remain a challenge to deal with”. He impressed upon the State Red Cross to create a pool of volunteers and train them in schools, colleges and universities so that they become the first responders in emergencies.
Earlier, General Secretary, Indian Red Cross Society, J&K State Branch, Roma Wani gave a detailed PowerPoint presentation about the activities being carried out by the organisation besides the role of volunteers during emergencies.
Divisional Commissioner presented certificates to the Red Cross Volunteers and visited the Jan Aushadhi Generic Drug Store and the dispensary being run by the State Branch and assured full support from divisional administration for the activities of Red Cross.
