Srinagar, June 9: Commercial Taxes Department today foiled an attempt to import banned polythene into the Valley and seized 600 kgs of polythene carry bags at Lowermunda checkpost.
Giving details, Commercial Taxes Officer (CTO) Checkpost Lowermunda, Hamid Ganai, said that a vehicle bearing registration No. JK05D/1497 was intercepted at the Checkpost and produced a Challan cum GR bearing No. 7154 Dated 02-06-2015 of M/s Saraswati Logistics Service, Fleet Owners & Transport Contractors , Jain Market GT Karnal Road, Delhi & Form VAT-58 ( Way-Bill) therein disclosing the goods as Plastic Goods only.
The vehicle was put under routine physical check and after hours long physical check of the vehicle , it was deducted that the driver was carrying excess quantity of Polythene carry bags without any document.
Accordingly, goods were inventerized in presence of driver & seized under Section 67(10), 67(5) & 67(9)a of J&K VAT Act. 2005 vide seizure memo No.257/LM-CT and proceedings were initiated against the driver/incharge of vehicle /owner of goods for violations of J&K VAT Act.He said that the driver /incharge of vehicle/owner of goods was penalized for the default & offense committed under the provisions of VAT Act and penalty Rs.100359 was recovered on spot.
The seized truck along with banned polythene carry bags is being handed over to the State Pollution Control Board for confiscation proceedings under rules.Ganai said, during the current financial year over 114 quantials along with three trucks were seized and same were handed over to the SPCB, Srinagar for further confiscation proceedings.
Ganai further said that the Commercial Taxes Department has seized over 464 quantials of banned polythene as on date and same was handed over to the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) Srinagar along with vehicles in compliance to the directions of Division Bench of Jammu and Kashmir High Court. He warned that whosoever will attempt to import polythene into valley and will try to make attempt of tax evasion at this checkpost will be dealt with iron hands.
