KARACHI, Aug 22: Five suspected gangsters have been shot dead in an encounter by a joint task force of the police in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi, police said.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Fida Hussain Janwari told reporters that the exchange of heavy fire took place last night in Ghulam Hussain Shah Lane near Lea Market in Lyari which is notorious for its rival criminal gangs.
“The Station House Officer (SHO) of Napier police station Azam Khan has been critically injured in the exchange while a Rangers personnel and a policeman were also wounded during heavy exchange of firing between the law enforcers and the gangsters,” Janwari said.
The encounter took place after police got intelligence reports that some gangsters were in Ghulam Hussain Shah Lane near Lea Market after which a joint team of the police and Rangers conducted a targeted raid on their hideout.
“One of those killed had established a reign of terror in Lyari,” police said. (PTI)
