Srinagar, Nov 14: In a major blaze incident, 40 shops were gutted in Iqbal Market of Kupwara town in North Kashmir late last evening.
Locals said the fire broke out at around 7:30 pm from a shop and engulfed adjoining shops. They said the intensity of the fire was such that within no time it consumed 40 shops in the Iqbal Market.
Although fire tenders rushed to the spot and started fire-fighting operation but before they could douse the flames, property worth crores was damaged in the blaze.
Police said they have started an investigation into the matter but maintained only 20 to 25 shops were gutted. “Most of the shops were medicinal shops,” it said, adding that cause of the fire is being ascertained.
