SRINAGAR, Dec 12: At least 30 residential structures were gutted in fire that broke out at Karpora area in the interiors of Dal lake here last night.

The fire broke out last night at around 10.30 p.m and engulfed around 30 residential huts of the area. “Nealry50-60 families have been rendered homeless due to the fire. Government should extend helping hand. The cause of the fire is unknown,” Arshad Ahmad, one of the affected persons said.
He, however, alleged that no one from the authorities came here.
Demanding compensation for the loss, another house owner, Farooq Ahmad Dharma said the authorities should make arrangement for the affected families. “How will they live in such a harsh weather conditions. It’s the duty of the Government to provide us some shelter and relief,” he said, adding that the houseboats were saved due to the efforts of CRPF.
The residents complained that no one from the authorities visited the area. “No one from the administration came here. Being a tourist place we were expecting Director Tourism and Deputy Commissioner to visit the area. ,” a local said.
Meanwhile, the Srinagar administration has sanctioned Rs one lakh as immediate relief in favour of each of the families affected in last night’s fire incident resulting from short-circuit at Abi Karpora near Dalgate’s Nehru Park area here.
Each of the 12 families affected in the unfortunate incident were also provided articles of essential use including mattresses and blankets. Complete kitchen sets also made part of the relief items provided to each of the affected families, an official spokesman said.
Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary who authorised relief in favour of the victims visited the area early today morning to take firsthand assessment of damages due to the fire incident.
