3-day training program on “Treatment & Mgmt of Drug Addiction” begins

JAMMU, Feb 17: J&K State Level Coordinating Agency of Union Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment today organized a three-day training program for nurses and paramedics on “Treatment and Management of Drug Addiction”, under National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR).
The program was inaugurated by Dr Shashi Sudan Sharma, Principal and Dean, Government Medical College, Jammu at Maternity Hospital, Gandhi Nagar. Speaking on the occasion, she stated that programs like these are the need of the hour and collaborative efforts should be taken to curb the menace of drugs from our society.
The resource persons for the three-day program are Dr Manu Arora (HoD Psychiatric Department, GMC Jammu), Dr Arti Bakshi (HoD Psychology Department, University of Jammu), Dr Arun Sharma (Medical Superintendent, Maternity Hospital, Gandhi Nagar) and Dr Abhishek Chauhan (Neuro-psychiatrist, GMC Jammu).
Around 40 participants from various departments of GMC Jammu, De-addiction Centres and Nursing Colleges participated in the program. Topics taken were “Local Scenario of Substance Use”, “Introduction of Psychoactive Substances”, “The Science of Addiction”, “Drug Abuse in Women & Pregnant Ladies” and “How to use screening tool ASSIST”.
The first day of training started by the session “Local Scenario of Substance Use” by Dr Arun Sharma, who discussed the facts and figures as per the surveys conducted by Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. At the end of the session, certain questions were raised by participants and satisfactory answers were given to them by resource person.
The second session of the day was “Introduction of Psychoactive Substances” taken by Dr Abhishek Chauhan. He discussed briefly the psychoactive substances one by one and also shared the withdrawal symptoms and effects of different psychoactive substances which include Alcohol, Cannabis, Opioids, Inhalants, Nicotine etc. The session was very informative and students enthusiastically participated by asking various questions related to substance use.
Third post-lunch session of day one was taken by Dr Arun Sharma on “Drug Abuse in Women & Pregnant ladies”. The day one of three-day training program concluded with the discussions and question-answer session.
