25,474 SPOs working in J&K, 1852 regularised: Govt

JAMMU, Mar 12: Over 25,474 Special Police Officers (SPOs) were working in the State while 1852 of them have been regularised as constables and followers.
In a written reply to a question of Congress Legislator Bashir Ahmad Magray in the Upper House here today, the Government stated that 25,474 SPOs are presently working in different units of the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
Till now nearly 1,852 SPOs have been regularised as constables and followers.
The Government further revealed that it has formulated a comprehensive policy for absorption of SPOs as regular Constables.
It said that the SPOs in the age group of 28-37, who have completed three years continuous engagement, are eligible to apply for appointment to the post of constables/followers and moreover, the recruitment through this source should not exceed 15 per cent of the available vacancies.
On the question of salary paid to these officers and whether the Government was contemplating to enhance their wages, the Government said that a proposal for enhancement of the honorarium of SPOs from the existing Rs 3,000 per month to Rs 5,000 per month has been submitted to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs for consideration.
In response to another question, the Government claimed that excellence in counter insurgency, sports activities, having ITI diploma in various trades are considered during their regularization.
