2 killed, 14 injured as taxi plunges into gorge

KISHTWAR, Oct 11: Two passengers were killed while 14 others got injured, six of them seriously when a cruiser taxi they were travelling in, rolled down into a deep gorge at Bagran on Karool-Badhat Road in Sarthal area.
“The mishap occurred this morning when the overloaded cruiser taxi which was carrying about 30 passengers, some hanging on backside and some sitting on roof top, rolled down into a deep gorge allegedly due to negligence of the driver who lost control over the vehicle,” a police official said. He said those sitting on roof top and hanging on backside managed to save their life by jumping off the vehicle.

He said as per the statements of the injured persons, the vehicle was driven by an untrained boy instead of a regular driver when the accident happened. “While one person namely Pardeep son of Rajinder resident of Bagran (Sarthal) was killed on the spot, 14 others received injuries in the mishap,” the official said, adding that on getting information of the mishap, a police team from police station Kishtwar rushed to the spot and started rescue operation along with locals.
All the injured persons were shifted to District Hospital (DH), Kishtwar, where one of them namely Kamlesh Kumar son of Dharam Singh of Bagran (Sarthal) was declared as brought dead while six others who were critically injured were referred to Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu for specialized treatment. They were identified as Sheetal Devi (11) daughter of Ramesh Kumar, Arun (14) son of Beer Singh, Abdul Rashid (39) son of Mir Hussain, Mamta Devi wife of Raj Kumar, Sushma Devi (16) daughter of Rajinder Kumar, Neema (37) wife of Rajinder, Chanchla Devi (30) wife of Surjeet and Suraj (10) son of Surjeet, all residents of Bagran (Sarthal).
Those undergoing treatment at DH Kishtwar are Mir Ali (30) son of Baji, Suresh Kumar (20) son of Munshi Ram, Suman (16) daughter of Beer Singh, Arjun son of Krishan Lal, Mir Ahmed (28) son of Ditta, Ditta (68) son of Talib Hussain, all residents of Bagran (Sarthal).
The police official said that a case in this connection was registered at police station police station Kishtwar and further investigation started while bodies of the deceased persons were handed over to their legal heirs for last rites after getting conducted postmortem at DH Kishtwar.
