2-day seminar on ‘Society, Culture and Politics in J&K’ begins at JU

JAMMU, Mar 29: Two- day seminar on Society, Culture and Politics in Jammu and Kashmir, organized by the Department of Sociology, University of Jammu, began here today on the campus.
In the inaugural session,   IGP Jammu Danesh Rana was chief guest who talked about the diversity of the State of Jammu and Kashmir and also shared other experiences of working in the State.
In her keynote address, Prof Navnita Chadha Behera from University of Delhi, touched the key issues pertaining to the State of J&K. She said that J&K offers rich repositories  and counter narratives about the State besides conflict side which has always been portrayed as the central concern. She argued  that sensitivity of intellectuals is required and it has to be articulated in writings. Jammu & Kashmir, she said is a microcosm of India, in terms of its diversity. She advocated that plurality of the State is an asset and who so ever has tried to homogenise has failed. Talking about her work ‘Demystifying Kashmir’, Prof Behera discussed a volley of subjects including Article 370, religion and politics besides accession of Jammu and Kashmir with Indian domain. She said the accession of J&K to the Union of India has a promise of democracy, secularism and federalism
The presidential remarks were made by Prof  R D Sharma, Vice Chancellor, JU.  He gave a summarized idea of the plural ethos, demography and diversity of the State of J&K.
Earlier in her welcome address, Prof  Abha Chauhan, Head, Department of Sociology, JU,  gave details on the theme of the seminar.
It was followed by the release of book titled as “Jammu and Kashmir: Essays in Society, Culture and Politics” edited by Prof Abha Chauhan.
