1st phase of Pulse Polio Immunization Program begins across J&K, Ladakh UTs

JAMMU, Jan 19: The 1st phase of Intensive Pulse Polio Immunization (IIPI) Programme began today across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh Union Territories (UTs) during which thousands of children of 0 to 5 years age group were administered polio vaccination drops to protect them against the crippling disease.
On the first day of the Programme, 1707309 children in the age bracket of 0-5 years were administered oral polio vaccine today throughout Jammu and Kashmir. In the Kashmir division, 948568 children were vaccinated against the crippling disease which amounted to 89 percent of the total target whereas in Jammu division, 758741 children were given polio drops amounting to 83 percent of the total target children.
Respective divisional and district administrations have made elaborate arrangements to cover all the children in the age group of 0-5 years. Health workers and volunteers shall carryout door-to-door visit in next two days in their allotted areas to ensure no child is left out of the vaccination programme.

Earlier during the day, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Ashwini Kumar Choubey, who inaugurated the National Immunisation Day at Gandhi Nagar Hospital here, urged all the officers and officials to continue working hard as the neighbouring countries still have wild polio cases.
“We should mobilise all the resources to keep polio at bay and continue to participate in the pulse polio immunization campaigns so that immunity of our children remains high,” he said. The Minister said on March 27, 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO) had declared India a polio-free country.
In SMGS Hospital Jammu, the Polio Vaccination Camp was held under the patronage of Principal, GMC Jammu, Dr Sunanda Raina. Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, Dr Manoj Chalotra and faculty members of Pediatrics department were also present on the occasion. A large number of children between age group 0-5 years were administered Polio drops during the camp.
The programme was inaugurated by Tehsildar Bhalwal Rafiq Ahmad Jaral at SDH Bhalwal, in presence of Block Medical Officer, Bhalwal Dr Sushma Matto and Child Development Programme Officer, ICDS, Bhalwal Firdousa Akhter and other officers of Health Department. During the first day, 92% of total targeted children of 21871 were administered polio drops at 150 booths established across the Block.
A Pulse Polio Booth was set-up in 166 Battalion Headquarter Sidhra Camp in Jammu to make the Government campaign successful. People of surrounding villages/area were motivated in advance to participate in the campaign. 465 children were administered pulse polio drops under the supervision of Prem Chandra Gupta, Commandant of the Battalion and other officers/men of the unit.
At Doda, District Development Commissioner Doda, Dr Sagar D Doifode inaugurated the programme at the Model Polio Booth in New District Hospital Doda by administering anti-Polio drops to the children. CMO Doda Dr Mushtaq Ahmed Shah and MS District Hospital Doda were present. At Bhadarwah, BMO Bhadarwah Dr Abdul Hameed Zarger along with other Health officers inaugurated the Pulse Polio Immunization programme by administering anti-polio drops to the children at Sub District Hospital Bhadarwah.
DC Kishtwar Angrez Singh Rana today kick started the three day campaign and administered Polio drops to children below 5 years at District Hospital Kishtwar in presence of ADDC Kishtwar Mohd Hanief Malik and Medical Superintendent District Hospital Kishtwar Dr Parvez Iqbal Wani. The DDC said that under the programme, Polio drops shall be provided to about 43805 children up to 5 years of age across the district for which 368 Polio booths has been established in the district.
In Ramban district, Deputy Commissioner (DC), Ramban, Nazim Zai Khan today inaugurated the IPPI programme phase-1 at District Hospital (DH) Ramban. Later, he disclosed that the during the drive carried out today in the district, about 59338 children out of 65569 upto 5 years of age were administered polio vaccines and rest of children will given polio drops at their places in next two days.
DC Rajouri Mohammad Nazir Sheikh today kick started three-day long campaign of Intensified Pulse Polio Immunization and administered vaccine to the children below five years of age at polio booth of Gujjar Mandi. On the occasion, Deputy Chief Medical Officer Rajouri, Dr Anees Altaf Nabi informed that 82% of the total target children have been covered on the first day of the immunization campaign.
In Samba district, DC Rohit Khajuria inaugurated the programme and instilled polio vaccine drops to newly born baby in the presence of Chief Medical Officer, Dr Rajinder Samyal at District Hospital Samba. Dr Samyal said that 38393 children have been immunized today in the booth activity. He said for next two days the teams of health works will conduct door to door activity and cover 59845 houses, 94 high risk areas including slums, brick kilns workers colony, nomads and construction site to immunize the left out children.
At Sub District Hospital (SDH) Mendhar in Poonch district, the programme was inaugurated by SDM Mendhar Dr Sahil Jandyal in presence of BMO Mendhar, Dr Parvaiz Ahmed Khan and Tehsildar Mendhar Vikram Kumar. The BMO disclosed that for success of the programme, 120 booths have been established and 480 employees have been engaged in Mendhar Block. “Besides, 12 booths have been established in border belt to ensure that no child is left without polio drops,” he added.
Jammu West Assembly Movement, Sunil Dimple inaugurated the immunization program at Pulse Polio Booth at New Plot, Jammu by administering the Polio drops to a baby. He appealed the people to pledge help India remained Polio free by ensuring that their children below 5 years of age are administered polio drops.
In Kargil district, the program was kicked off by Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), LAHDC, Kargil Feroz Ahmad Khan along with the Executive Councilor for Health Muhammad Ali Chandan by administering polio vaccination drops to a new born infant at District Hospital Kargil. The District Immunization Officer Kargil informed on the occasion that a total of 332 Pulse Polio Immunization booths have been set up in the district across all blocks to vaccinate 16724 children of 0 to 5 years age group.
To mark the launch of Pulse Polio Immunization campaign in Leh district, Deputy CEC, LAHDC, Leh Tsering Sandup today administered two drops of polio to a new born at SNM, Hospital Leh. Director, Health Services Ladakh Dr Phuntsog Angchuk and CMO, Leh Dr Mutop Dorjey were present on the occasion. The Deputy CEC gave a detail account of the process of Pulse Polio Immunization Programme. Sandup also flagged off a mobile team dedicated for the pulse polio vaccination campaign from SNM, Hospital, Leh.
DC Anantnag, Khalid Jahangir inaugurated the programme in the district by administering polio drops to newborn infants at MCCH Anantnag. He informed that 1023475 children will be immunized under the programme for which 650 vaccination booths including 5 High Risk Area and 14 transit booths have been setup in the district.
In Baramulla district, DC Dr G N Itoo inaugurated the programme at District Hospital Baramulla in presence of Chief Medical Officer, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Medical Superintendent, District Immunization Officer and other concerned. It was informed that 1.62 lakh children will be immunized at 875 vaccination booths established in the district.
At Bandipora, DC Bandipora, Shahbaz Ahmad Mirza inaugurated the programme at District Hospital Bandipora. Chief Medical Officer Bandipora, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, BMO and other concerned officers were present on the occasion. The DC informed that under the programme 60753 children were immunized at 332 booths established in the district.
In Budgam, DC Tariq Hussain Ganaie inaugurated the programme at Chief Medical Officer’s Office. It was informed that as many as 106271 children between 0-5 years age group are being covered under the programme and 2468 officers including 1048 Health Workers, 624 ASHA workers, 672 ICDS workers and 124 voluntaries have been deployed across the district.
At Ganderbal, DC Hashmat Ali Khan kick- started the programme at District Hospital Ganderbal in presence of CMO, DHO, Deputy CMO, Medical Superintendent and other concerned. The DC informed that under the programme 47257 children will be immunized in district for which 226 IPPI centers have been set up, besides deploying 932 and 49 supervisors for the smooth conduct of the programme.
In Kupwara district, DC Anshul Garg launched the programme at Sub District Hospital in presence of CMO, Medical Superintendent and other concerned. It was informed that under the programme, 130000 children will be immunized at 1726 IPPI Centres established in the district.
At Kulgam, the DC Showkat Aijaz Bhat, inaugurated the programme at District Hospital. It was informed on the occasion that under the programme, 508 vaccination booths have been established in the district to vaccinate 88033 children.
In Pulwama district, DC Dr Raghav Langer launched the IPPI programme at Chief Medical Officer’s office in presence of CMO, Deputy CMO, District Immunization Officer, Nodal Officer RBSK and other concerned. Under the programme 94297 children will be vaccinated at 466 IPPI booths established in the district.
At Shopian, DC Choudhary Mohammad Yasin launched the programme at District Hospital Shopian. He informed that as many as 235 Pulse Polio booths have been set up across the district to vaccinate 43757 children. Besides, 344 health workers including Anganwari and ASHA workers have been deployed for the job.
